Gesture Drawing

Gesture drawing is a way of quickly getting the general look and pose of a figure or object on paper. Gesture drawing loosens up the students and enables them to see the basic shapes and "lines of action" in a person or object quickly. Gesture drawing is used by animators to quickly rough out the look of whatever they're animating. (see example hand-out here.)

Students are given instruction on basic human proportions and how to represent a human body with quick lines and simple geometric shapes. They then draw objects or people standing in the room from different angles. These drawings are VERY fast, only allowing a couple minutes for each.

Students are shown Gesture drawing examples and a quick demonstration of gesture drawing is done by the teacher.

A video example of 20 second gesture drawings is shown in class and students follow along drawing some of the poses shown.

Images are used in the beginning while students practice gesture drawing. Then students pose in class so we can see how a pose changes from various viewpoints.
