Composition

Leading Lines

This lesson is used on the first day of Photography class after a quick Introduction to the class.

Some time is taken to download and install Photoshop first. While Photoshop downloads, the teacher talks about composition and how it affects the photograph. Special note is made of the "leading lines" contained within each photo's composition. Leading lines are imaginary lines formed by parts of the photograph. They lead the viewer's eye to a specific part of the photo.

Some photos are shown where there is obvious (and not so obvious) use of leading lines.

The teacher may draw on the board to illustrate the leading lines of the photograph.

Students are given time to find 10 photos with leading lines. This may be done in class with magazines or on-line through photo sites like Flickr or Unsplash.

Evaluation
Each student will receive 1 point for each photo based on correct identification of leading lines in the photo.

Find large images (Click here for instructions) and put all 10 images into a single document and submit it to schoology.
10 points total
