Clay Cut Print

ClayCut Print (Simulated Woodcut print)

The teacher demonstrates how to roll a slab of clay and cut it to a 4-inch by 4-inch square.

Then, using a slab made the previous day the teacher demonstrates how to indent his 4-inch by 4-inch drawing (that was also made the previous day) onto the leather hard clay slab by putting the 4X4 drawing on top of the slab and using a dull pencil and redrawing over the paper, pressing into the clay.

Ribbon tools are used to cut clay away just like gouges are used in a woodcut.

A test print is made to see if anything needs deeper carving. Corrections can be made, then more prints are made. Mixing colors can give interesting results.

Evaluation:
2 points -- No larger than 4.25X 5.5 inches
2 points -- Interesting unusual creative design
3 points -- Carved neatly
3 points -- 4 prints made (or more)
10 points total
