    Background Middle Ground Foreground

This lesson teaches students how to compose a picture using different shades of color to indicate objects in the Foreground (close to viewer), Midground (middle), and Background (far from viewer). This concept is also called Aerial, or Atmospheric Perspective and best illustrated, in real life, through landscape photos. (Another example)

Students are given small rectangles of paper and asked to shade along with the teacher as he shows how to compose a few drawings that illustrate 3 or more levels of depth.

    Evaluation:

    4 points -- Duplication of teacher's examples
    3 points -- 2 new examples from student's imagination
3 points -- Good shading/coloring to illustrate Atmospheric Perspective
    10 points total
