Students are introduced to resin casting through a couple videos of production resin casting and fiberglass manufacturing:
Embedding an object in resin
The teacher demonstrates how to mix resin with catalyst. Click here for a printable resin mix chart.
Mold Thickness | Resin | Catalyst |
Eighth to Quarter inch | 1 Tablespoon | 6 drops |
Quarter to Half inch | 1 Tablespoon | 4 drops |
Half Inch and over | 1 Tablespoon | 2 drops |
Mold release is used and Neatness is emphasized in how they pour the resin and clean up.
How to embed objects is also discussed and demonstrated.
After the resin is cured, students will pop out their objects and clean them up by filing the sharp edges.
Evaluation:
4 points -- Neatness (no drips and mess as student mixes and pours)
3 points -- Followed directions/mixed properly
3 points -- Filed/sanded to a nice rounded smooth edge
