A little experiment here...
The plate seen here is a Christmas gift for my wife. Normally I don't post Christmas projects until after the 25th but I'm curious if anyone will notice that it's here for her to see. She says she doesn't like surprises so maybe this'll make her Christmas a little more fun.

CHALKTOBER! 2nd annual Chalktober is going on NOW. Today I'm halfway through. See the progress here.

A week ago I was fortunate enough to take part in the St. Cloud Art Crawl. Some of Brodin Studios' employees set up their artwork downtown for the show and I did a sculpture demo during that time. It's always a challenge to speak with people while still capturing a likeness in clay. Add to that the fact that we were only there for 4 hours and actual sculpting time was less than that... Yeah, you're hearing excuses. All things considered, I'm not too disappointed with the night's work. Click the image above for pics and more info.

I've been working part time at Brodin Studios doing preliminary clay work for their bronze statues. (I'm not sure I'd call my work there sculpting, but it's kinda along the lines of sculpture.) Permission hasn't been given yet to show some of the projects I'm working on so for now you'll have to wait for my personal work to be shown... Problem is, when I spend 10 hours working with clay there, I don't feel much like working with clay here. Maybe that's why my personal projects are few and far between. Anyway, here's a little sculpt I had fun making earlier this month.

Theo Graduated today. Every time I see another of my kids reach that point in their lives I wonder how the time could fly by so fast.

We took a picture of the kids when Andrew graduated and another today with the graduate, Theo. Click the links here to see the two pictures and click the image in the corner here to see how Theo's portrait was made.

I presented Gregg his sculpture today. It's always fun seeing the client's reaction to the finished piece.

It's also fun to see the students' reaction. After presenting it to Gregg, I showed my classes the finished product. Each of them had seen me work on it during their art class but they hadn't seen the whole process until they saw the video today. (Gotta love days like today with 300 kids givin' me compliment after compliment!)

I feel the need to advertise my work more. To that end, I made pillars at the end of our driveway to hold a couple sculptures. As I work through ideas, nothing seems good enough. First The Prophet, and now "Revelation". This is a small model of a proposed driveway sculpture. Click the image for more information.

The day before Easter Karen said she'd like some funky rabbits to decorate with next year. I went down and sculpted one as an "approval piece". She approved so I made a family. Using water-based clay was a challenge because the ears are so tall and thin. We'll see if they survive the drying days until the kiln. Wish me luck!

Another in my Great Men series, Gregg was sculpted during my class time at Atwater. Gregg is absolutely the best maintenance man I've ever had the privilege of working with. He has taken such good care of me during my time at Atwater Elementary, even going so far as pulling off the slate chalkboard from my old room and installing it in the new art room. He never ceases to impress!

More and more our days are filled with computer work and things that, when we look back, show no real accomplishment. It seems that more and more people are "consuming" instead of "making". I'm a maker.

School was cancelled Friday (yesterday). So after doing mundane and frustrating paperwork and dealing with health insurance junk, I needed a creative "something". Making a fast sculpture always makes me feel better. I have a crazy insatiable need to make things. I don't feel good about myself or my day if I have nothing to show for it. The little sculpture above is a (maybe unsuccessful) caricature of movie star, Clive Owen.

Giovanni Dupre's sculpture of Cain inspired me to make a sharp featured face. I was torn between making a quick study and recycling it or making something impressive. As it turned out it became a functional and decorative piece. A set of bookends. See the how it evolved here.
