Before students start designing a yearbook that will be printed and archived for decades, they need to learn the basics of good design.

"The Non-Designer's Design Book" by Robin Williams is a good place to start.

Students are shown examples of good and bad design.

The class discusses principles of good design including:
  • Simple is good
  • Make important information stand out
  • Line things up
  • Don't make it crowded
  • Limit the number of fonts
  • Limit the number of colors

  • Students are to complete each of the three Design Lesson Sets below. (We'll work on each design set in class so students have 3 days to get all 3 done.)

  • Design Lesson Set 1
  • Design Lesson Set 2
  • Design Lesson Set 3

  • Evaluation:
10 points will be earned for each design set based on the following criteria:
3 points -- Good use of Font size/style/design
2 points -- Good use of Alignment
2 points -- Good use of other design principles listed above
    3 points -- Neatness/effectiveness of finished product
