Students are given time to read through a slide presentation about Typography (click here).

A video is also shown that explains one of the most important advances in the printing world, the Linotype.

Another video about the Letter Press also has some interesting historical information.

For this project, Students should make their initials using a font that they modify in some way to create a more interesting combination of letters that could nearly be a logo.

The teacher demonstrates some ways to modify letters in Illustrator by using the Direct Select tool, Anchor Point tool and Scissors tool along with the Pen tool.

The finished project should be arranged nicely and display the student's initials in the original font, the font name, and a larger graphic of the altered letters. (See example below) Turn in a .jpg or .png file.

Evaluation:

2 points -- Formatted Correctly/followed directions
4 points -- Use of Graphic or color
4 points -- Sufficient modifications made
10 points total.
