Mid quarter test: Ancient-Byzantine art
Art Collector may be used by the teacher to arrange a group of images from previous lectures. The teacher may wish to include text that corresponds to prior lectures to refresh students memories. Students can then write their reactions to the works and answer questions presented in the test collection. The instructor must be careful to publish the test collection only during the time students will be taking the test and to unpublish it again when students finish their work. This ensures a level of test security.
This assessment can be used to indicate how well students have grasped the overall content of the course to date.
In addition, a sample test could be made by the teacher and published a week or two in advance of the test so students can study from it before the real test.
Because each instructor has a different level of knowledge in the historical areas covered, different teaching styles, and because of the immense diversity of student interest/discussion that is possible in this class, no specific questions or answers are provided here. It is recommended that a teacher create a class specific collection of images taken from the provided sample collections and create questions based on the teachers own lecture and class room discussions.
Alternative assessments can be used as well. For example, students may be required to write a reaction paper to certain works or to create a collection of their own that illustrates a concept put forth during lecture or class discussion.
