Due 4/4
Notice that, to give it the illusion of depth, each drawing includes a little shading where the bars or lines fall in front of the figure. This gives the illusion that the figure is behind the lines and adds a sense of depth.

Due 4/7
A lesson on cartooning is done prior to this lesson. If you haven't gone through the cartooning lesson already, a short video similar to what is covered in our cartooning unit can be found on Youtube here, or download it here.
1. Practice drawing 3-d shapes with crayons first (Youtube video lesson) -- (Downloadable video lesson)
2. Next draw your cartoon lightly with pencil. Make it as large as you can because crayons are thick. You won't be able to blend or shade with the thick crayons on a small drawing. In class we use 24X32 inch paper. Use whatever you have today.
3. Choose 3 or more crayons of a certain color. For example, a light blue, normal blue and dark blue. Use the lightest of the 3 and start laying the color on, pressing harder on the outside edges of the drawing and lighter toward the inside.
4. Use the middle color and layer it on like the first color, being sure to make it look 3-d by pressing harder and laying more color down on the outside edges while blending toward light on the inside of each shape.
5. Do the same with the darker color.
6. Now find Complimentary colored 3 crayons (opposite color on the color wheel. See illustration here). So if you used blues first, you would find three orange colored crayons. Note that yellow and purple don't work so well. Choose purple and green or yellow and red.
7. Repeat the layering process with the Complimentary colors starting with the lightest and blending as you did in step 3-5.
8. When you are finished with color, use black to outline all the shapes to give a sharper detail. Use black to blend and add a little extra shade as well. Note how the black is used in this example.
A time-lapse video of layered crayon coloring of a cartoon face can be found on youtube here. (Downloadable version here.) The finished cartoon here.
