Pieta Extra Credit: We have a unique opportunity as a Catholic school to study art in a way public schools cannot. This Friday we remember our Lord Jesus' Passion and Death on the cross. Michelangelo's Pieta sculpture is the perfect image of an event that happened on the first Good Friday when Jesus' mother Mary received his lifeless body before it was placed in the tomb.
Research the Pieta on your own and respond to the following questions for 5 points of Extra credit. And then, on Good Friday, remember the image as you meditate on our Lord's passion and Death.
1. What does the word "Pieta" mean and what language is it?
2. How old was Michelangelo when he carved it?
3. What year was it broken by a crazy man with a hammer?
4. Where did Michelangelo sign the artwork?
5. Tell me one thing you are impressed with, surprised by or amazed about the Pieta.
