Leaf Texture Rubbings

The texture unit starts out with texture rubbings. Next, students make texture in clay. And finally we draw simulated texture on paper with pencils.
If the day is nice enough we go out side, find leaves and rub crayons over the leaves. When back in the classroom, students are given a small black frame and are instructed to find the most interesting part of their leaf rubbings.

Students then trace around the outside of the frame, cut out the leaf rubbing to match the frame and glue it to the frame.

We also talk about how we display artwork and how sometimes seeing art laying on the desk is different than an artwork that is hanging on the wall in a nice frame. Museum displays are discussed if time permits.
