Single Layer Paper Cutout Contact Print in the Darkroom

One of the first projects done in the darkroom is a contact print where students layer paper pieces over black and white photographic paper, expose it to light and develop it. This project gives each student experience in the dark room using the enlargers and making photographic prints.

Students use the art room to draw and cut out paper pieces for their print. Students need to make three different layers, one for the foreground objects, one for the middle ground objects and one for the background.

In the dark room students expose the paper for 5 seconds, removing each layer after about 2 seconds, resulting in different exposures for each layer.

Develop paper for about a minute.
Stop bath for 15 seconds
Fix for 2 minutes
Wash in running water for 4-5 minutes
