Single Layer Paper-Stencil Contact Print in the Darkroom

One of the first projects done in the darkroom is a contact print where students lay a stencil on black and white photographic paper, expose it to light and develop it. This project gives each student experience in the dark room using the enlargers and making photographic prints.

Students use the art room to draw and cut out paper stencils for their print. Students need to make something that can easily be understood with simple black and white areas. We use scissors exclusively so they need to plan out their cuts and be careful when cutting into an area.

REMEMBER: Everything covered with paper will result in white while anything uncovered will be black

In the dark room students expose the paper for 5 seconds.

Develop paper for about a minute.
Stop bath for 15 seconds
Fix for 2 minutes
Wash in running water for 4-5 minutes

Evaluation:

2 pts: Pencil tracing approved (Hand in paper initialized by teacher)
3 pts: Intricacy Neatness of stencil
4 pts: Exposed and developed properly.
