The teacher or a professional guest demonstrate the proper use of the Oxy-Acetylene torch.
Students are given a
study guide for the Oxy-Acetylene torch. After passing the Oxy-Acetylene written and practical test with 100 percent they may use the torch to make practice welds. Three welds, (Straight bead, Butt, and Lap) must be turned in for a grade.

Evaluation:
1 point for cleaning of welds prior to turning in
3 points for each weld based on the quality of the weld including:
Appearance
Penetration
Lack of defects such as porosity, craters, and undercutting
10 Points Total
1: Satisfactory weld bead that could be more uniform
2: Poor bead caused by a torch tip that is too large for material being welded or slow speed of travel
3: Caused by moving too rapidly, not allowing a proper weld bead to form
4: Satisfactory weld except for burned section at far right. Defect caused by not moving the weld bead fast enough as the weld is being completed.
