When the slabs are leather heard they are rubbed over with a sponge to smooth and round the shapes out. A dowel is pushed in to make a hole that will hold the dowel "stem" after they're fired. After glazing the students paint over the flowers with black ink and wash it off to simulate a Raku fired appearance.
