Undulating pipes and segmented worms
1. After an introduction to Op Artists Riley and Vasarely, students start by making gently waving lines across a piece of paper from left to right.
2. Next a line is drawn through the center from top to bottom. This line should also wave slightly.
3. Almonds or football shapes are drawn where the vertical line intersects with the horizontal lines. The vertical line is then erased.
4. Repeated curved lines are added corresponding to the almond shapes from step 3.
5. Colored pencil is used to shade the edges of each segment fading from dark on the edges to light toward the center.
6. Sharpie marker is used to define each segment and "punch up" the final drawing. (line weight is discussed as a way to push the depth even further.)
