Spinners


Minnesota 4-5 Visual Art Standards used in this Lesson:

  • 1. Demonstrate knowledge of the foundations of the arts area.
  • 1A. Describe the characteristics of the elements of visual art including color, line, shape, value, form, texture and space.

  • 1b. Describe how the principles of visual art such as repetition, pattern, emphasis, contrast and balance are used in the creation, presentation or response to visual artworks.

  • Quilling

    • The teacher demonstrates how to make spinners out of paper strips. Pattern and Repetition are discussed as principles of art.

    Students are given a toothpick and various colored paper strips. Students glue a strip to the toothpick and start rolling it up. More strips are glued on as needed to build up the spinner.

    When the strips are dry, students can spinn them like a top. If time permits we will "perform" our art by having spinning contests.
