Be Words

This lesson is done, with some modification, in k-12 at ACGC. (started Fall 2017)

Students are shown how to make a Bee by cutting out a yellow teardrop shape and gluing 3 strips of black paper on it. (Alternatively, the students could use black paint and a brush and be taught how to dry-brush the edges to make it look fuzzy.)

If there's extra time in any part of this process, we brainstorm "Be" words and compile a list.

Next Wings are made of reflective or acetate paper. Using same technique as they did for the body: First cut your wing paper in half. Draw a teardrop shape on one piece, then cut it out. Trace it onto the other and cut that one out. Then glue it to the Bee Body so that it sticks out. Pipe cleaner antenna are stapled on. (Older students staple their own, while younger ones bring their Bee up to the teacher to get it stapled.) Remember to make sure the staple touches the pipe cleaner first.

Wiggley Eyes can be glued on or simple sharpie marker drawn eyes work as well.

After the Bees are made students are shown Graffiti letters and techniques to make them.

Given a paper, students fold it in half twice to make 4 different sections to draw in. The first letter we try is the easiest, a lower case i. Letters are outlined, then students do another letter but they push the corners out and make "Leaning Lines". We practice the letters I, T, E, V, M, O, B, and A. See image below:

Next, students are shown how to put a word together and how letters can overlap. A quick coloring Demo is done and they can color their simple word. After practicing a simple word like "FUN", they are given good paper to make their own "Be" word. A list of "Be" words can be found here.

If there's time a short video about making graffiti is shown. (local video)
