String Block Print

Students start by reviewing many different printing processes and some print artists' work.

Students are shown examples of our finished projects and given a demonstration on how to tie off their yarn. Then each student is given a small hard board and some yarn. Students are to wrap the yarn around the board in various different directions and tie it off. Careful note is made that each knot should be on the same side and that side will be our "handle" side while the opposite is the "printing" side.

Students dip their yarn blocks into paint that has been spread on paper plates and then stamp their yarn blocks onto their paper. Multiple prints can be made with one dipping. And they may experiment with rotating their yarn blocks and printing multiple times, one over the next, to give a different look to the print.

Each table has a different color paint on it and we rotate from table to table making prints. While Students make multi-color prints, they see how paints mix to produce different colors.
