Students are introduced to Pablo Picasso and his cubist artwork. They see how he abstracted the objects/people he painted and "flattened" parts to make objects look sharp edged and cube-like.
Next students are shown how easy it is to draw like Picasso. We start by "cubizing" a simple object like an apple. Next students are shown how to "cubize" Mr. Kulzer's face. Students then have time to draw their own cubist face. It may be a portrait, or an imaginary person.
Students use their drawing as a template for their clay Picasso Face. They roll a slab of clay and cut out pieces for eyes, ears, hair, etc. Each piece must have slip (liquid clay) applied after it is scored (scratched up on the back). Slip and Score is how we "glue" clay together.
And sometimes we listen to Picasso Polka while we work.
Finished projects will be tinted with watercolor paint.
