After a quick clay technique demonstration, Students flatten their clay by hand first, then use a rolling pin to flatten it more consistently.
Next students use toothpicks to cut out their house shapes based on what they learned during the teacher demo on the board. Care is taken to smooth out the sharp edges made by the toothpick cuts.
When fired, the clay houses are painted in muted pastel colors.
