First and Second Grade Students make heart shaped flags in honor of Veteran's Day.
Images about Veteran's Day are presented to the students. Mr. Kulzer talks about the 9-ft. tall statues he helped make for the Fort Hood Hospital in Texas and relates that to how we remember our war veterans on this special day.
Images of how the United States Flag has evolved over the years are also shown.
Patriotism is discussed and ideas about how to illustrate our patriotism are brainstormed.
The project starts out with a quick demonstration of the process to create our "Heart Flags".
1. Students trace a heart onto their white paper using the template given.
2. Students glue the blue piece of paper to the right side of their heart shape; making sure to overlap it outside the heart shape.
3. Red stripes are then glued on, again overlapping the heart shape
4. The heart template is lined up and retraced over the red and blue parts to provide a good cutting line for the students.
5. Students cut the hearts out.
6. Stars are cut out and glued to the blue patch.
