Positive and Negative Squares


Students are shown some interesting patters made with squares and lines. Along with the images, color theory is covered with emphasis on complimentary color schemes. Complimentary colors are those that are directly opposite each other in the color wheel. For example, Blue is directly opposite of Orange. Purple and Yellow are complimentary colors. A color wheel is shown as an example.

A demonstration is given on how to trace the squares of the template with a pencil and how to overlap the squares and rectangles to make a nice composition.

After the shapes and lines are drawn students choose two markers to color their paper, alternating the colors with each shape and lines as seen in the example below.
