Kandinski Trees

"I love circles today in the same way that previously I loved... horses, perhaps even more." -- Wassily Kandinski

"To create a work of art is to create the world." -- Wassily Kandinski

"Everything starts from a dot." -- Wassily Kandinski

Once again students learn a little about a historically significant artist through a fun assignment inspired by his work.

Students view and discuss works by Wassily Kandinski (and possibly discuss a little color theory.)

Students are given plastic bags where they can store all the colored paper circles they cut out. A quick lesson in tree branch drawing is given before they try to draw and cut out their trees on brown paper. (A template is here for those who were absent.)

Students cut circles out of squares (a quick review lesson on how to cut out a circle from a square of paper is given. For this assignment students may start with one small circle, glue it to a larger different colored square and then cut that into a circle and add it to a larger square and so on.) of different colored papers and glue them to the tree branches.
