A brief survey of Georgia O'Keeffe's work is shown in class. We discuss her use of color and how she enlarges or "blows up" the flower images.
Students start by tracing various sized flower petal shapes on their paper. Special note is made to fill the paper with many shapes.
Next, a short demonstration of watercolor use is given as a review. (They have used watercolor in many other assignments so this should be a quick demo.) Emphasis is placed on the watercolor technique of "Wet into Wet". We use an entire class period to paint the various flower petals they traced previously.
Next time we meet, after the petals are dry, They will compose their "Georgia O'Keeffe" flower painting by cutting out the petals and gluing them to a backing paper. Concepts of Foreground, Middleground and Background are discussed so that students understand how to place the Larger petals in the background, Medium petals in the mid-ground, and Smallest petals in the Foreground.
