Minnesota K-3 Visual Art Standards Used in This Lesson:

  • 1. Identify the elements of visual art including Color, line, shape, Form, Value, texture and space.

    • Students are shown how to draw coffee cups in class. They follow along as the teacher demonstrates on the board.

    Next, Students use sharpie marker to darken in the lines. Emphasis is placed on using thick and thin lines. See first illustration below. Notice how the bottom left cup was inked but looks unfinished because there are no thick and thin lines. The bottom right hasn't been inked at all.

    Finally watercolor or oil pastels are used to color the drawing.
