Slow lines... A Snail Trail
Rules: No letters or words and no lifting your pencil.
Students are given a piece of paper and pencil for this exercise. In first grade we start by doing a "slow line" drawing exercise where students draw a line on their paper very slowly. It can be wiggley or zig zag or anything as long as they draw it slowly.
Then the teacher picks out 2 or 3 of the better examples to show the class so that everyone sees what we are looking for in their drawings.
Now we do another "slow line" drawing. students need to connect the line to one side of the previous line, either the start or end of the line.
Names on the papers now and flip the page over to start our Artistical Chairs drawings.
A student starts a drawing at his table and when the music starts they have to get up and move around the room until the music stops. Then they have a few seconds to add to the drawing at the place where they stopped.
This process is repeated many times until the teacher says it's time to stop and "turn the room into an Art Museum" where we all can see the artwork. Students walk around looking at everyone's work for a minute or two.
Next we have a "debriefing" session where we discuss what it was like to draw on someone else's paper and how it felt to have someone else complete an artwork that you started. We also discuss how the artwork has changed immensely.
At times we may start with the "section sheet" where students start a drawing at the top of the page and the next student draws in the second section but they must also make it fit with the first.
