This lesson was adapted from Claudia Loubier's Treasure Map Art Lesson and done in all grades fall 2018
Students are shown a finished map as inspiration.
The first day is a drawing practice day where the teacher shows students how to make interesting icons for their maps. See examples from Claudia Loubier here. And my chalk board examples here.
Next a worksheet with circles on it is distributed for students to practice drawing detailed Rose of the Winds (Windrose) or Compass Rose on. Students should make at least 3 Compass Roses.
Younger students are given a hand out with a map outline on it while the older students are shown how to make an island with 3-d cliffs.
Next students can color their maps. Younger students use crayons while older students use colored pencil.
The maps may be outlined with sharpie marker then stained with a mixture of coffee an water. After the maps are dry, they can be glued to a black backing paper for display.
