Monster Pieces


Minnesota K-3 Visual Art Standards Used in This Lesson:

  • 1. Identify the elements of visual art including Color, line, shape, Form, Value, texture and space.

  • 2. Identify the tools, materials and techniques from a variety of two- and three-dimensional media such as drawing, printmaking, ceramics or sculpture.

  • 3. Identify the characteristics of visual artworks from a variety of cultures including the contributions of Minnesota American Indian tribes and communities.

  • 4. Create original two- and three- dimensional artworks to express ideas, experiences or stories.

  • 5. Share and describe a personal artwork and reflect on a presentation based on the feedback of others.

    • This project is a collaboration between the 4th grade (and sometimes 3rd grade too) and the Kindergarten class. We call it a "Service Project" because the older kids are helping the younger ones by creating monster parts, Eyes, Mouths, Bodies, Arms, etc. for the younger students to use.

    Kindergarteners get to choose pieces from the "Monster parts bank" to make their own little monsters.

    They are encouraged to lay out the parts to make one monster, then lay out parts to make another monster before deciding which is the best to glue on their paper.

    The monster pieces are glued to a colored background paper and displayed in the hall for all students to see. (It's fun for the older kids to see the parts they made being used to create crazy new monsters.)
