The first day in art class students learn how Mr. Kulzer runs his class.
We start out gathering in our Art Start Space on the floor where students will see examples and be introduced to the lesson and objectives at the beginning of each period.
Today we gather to talk about how art is the most Enjoyable class they'll have all week. This is a class where they get to play with things that they might not get to play with in any other place.
We talk about how art, sometimes, is nothing more than action. Performance art is when people stand up in front of an audience and do things. Sometimes it's a painting done in front of others. Sometimes it's a play and sometimes it's a musical performance.
Some examples of performance art are shown on the screen and we discuss how we can make performance art.
We will also read "The Dot" by Peter H. Reynolds.
Today students will start a quick Self Portrait assignment. We practice drawing a face following along as Mr. Kulzer draws on the board.
Each student is given a hand-out with a frame drawn on it. Their job is to fill the frame with a drawing of themselves. Pictures of each student holding their finished portrait will be taken and archived for a similar project that we will do at the end of the year. Comparisons can then be made to see how the students have improved in their drawing skills.
Examples of self portraits done by famous artists are shown as well.
Scroll down for a couple finished examples of our self portraits.
