Hollowing can be a harrowing process. If the sculptor cuts too deeply, he could go through and have to patch the hole that was cut through. Fortunately that didn't happen here. This image illustrates the head hollowed out. Because I simply layer on pieces of clay when I'm sculpting, air pockets are created. They need to be vented before firing so small needle holes are poked into the clay to relieve any air bubbles that may be trapped. Note the support pipe sticking through.
