Abby commissioned me to sculpt a loon out of butter for her mom because she loves the Minnesota State Fair. Scroll down for progress shots and a video.
Time-lapse below showing the first part of the sculpture being made
Next sticks of butter were arranged so I could see how much I'd need.
A small torch was used to melt the sticks together.
Working, not in my studio, but in my kitchen, I used a butter knife for the majority of the sculpting and rubber gloves to keep things clean and sanitary.
The sculpture was done on a ceramic tile which afforded a nice smooth and solid surface to work on.
Another view of the finished, 9 inch long, sculpture.
After the presentation at her parents' house (She facetimed in from New York), Abby wrote me saying:
Gerry,
I am so excited by how the final product turned out. It was great getting to see everyone’s reactions. I think this will go down as one of the best Mother’s Day gifts ever given in our family and I have you to thank for that.
I hope to be in MN during the fair and if I am, I will be sure to stop by and say hello to you as you are carving.
Thank you again for your time and I hope you have a great summer.
