Hollowing process:
  • First a section is cut away from the back of the head. Note the many cavities here. Clay slabs were used to build up the form and air was trapped between the slabs, forming the cavities seen here.
  • Next a ribbon tool was used to hollow out the head. After which needle holes are poked in to vent any possible air cavities. Then the section that was cut out is replaced and "welded" together with slip.
  • This process is repeated in various places so that the entire sculpture is hollowed out.
  • (Note in the large picture a support column is left in the chest area to help hold up the weight of the head.)
