Wax Cast
After a mold is made, liquid wax is poured into the mold, swished around and poured out again multiple times to build up a consistent thickness of wax inside the mold.
The foundry that NKC Sculpture works with uses the "Lost Wax" technique of casting bronze. Wax parts are dipped into a liquid ceramic compound to form a hard shell mold. Molten bronze is poured into this shell, vaporizing the wax. When the bronze is cool the ceramic shell is broken off to reveal the cast bronze part. All the parts are then cleaned up and welded together to form the finished bronze statue.
Here the arm of the soldier has been cast in wax and the mold is being removed.
