5th Grade Industrial Technology Description/Standards

  • 1. Demonstrate knowledge of fractions as used in measurements.
  • 1a. Understand how to read metric and english ruler measurements.
  • 1b. Understand how to add and subtract fractions in half and quarter increments.
  • 1c. Use rulers to draw accurately measured lines.
  • 1d. Use rulers to draw simple shapes to scale.

  • 2. Demonstrate knowledge and skills in giving paper structural strength.
  • 2a. Understand real world applications of folds to improve structure/strength.
  • 2b. Create Paper self-supporting paper towers.
  • 2c. Create paper bridges.
  • 2c. Create flying paper airplanes.

  • 3. Demonstrate knowledge and use of the technical skills of leather working.
  • 2a. Understand real world applications of leather work.
  • 2b. Understand and apply leather working techniques to make a bookmark.
  • 2c. Clean and finish leather.

  • 4. Understand mechanics of gears and simple machines.
  • 4a. Understand real world applications of gears/wheels in transportation.
  • 4b. Understand gear ratios.
  • 4c. Follow directions to create simple lego machines.
  • 4d. Create original machines without directions

  • 5. Make a wood craft cut-out.
  • 5a. Understand woodworking tools and safety precautions.
  • 5b. Use wood working tools to cut and smooth a simple shape.
  • 5c. Use paints, stains and varnish to finish project.



    • Students are given a technical Lego set #1032 that includes gears, axles, and motors. The teacher demonstrates how to put things together and use the axels and wheels to make a car. (A set of wheels may also be provided.)

    Students are to make their own car using the pieces provided.

    Before racing students must present their vehicle to the class and explain (pitch) the reasons why they did certain things. (Why they used these wheels as opposed to others. Why they made it the shape it is. Why they added this or that part/piece. Etc.)

    They then race the car down an incline and see whose goes the farthest.

    Evaluation: 3 points -- Style/coolness
    3 points -- Verbal explanation to the class
    3 points -- Race distance
    1 point -- Use of class time
