Scratchart/Scratchboard

Students are given some time to research scratch art and black lineart images. They are to choose three of their favorites and from those three upload one to our assignment page during class. Halfway through the class, the teacher pulls up each student's drawing and displays it, discussing the merits of each artwork.

Students can trace the image they want to use onto thin paper or draw their own. Then students use pencils to color a good shade of gray on the back of their paper to make "Carbon paper" or "Graphite paper".

The paper is placed over the scratchboard so the graphite side touches the black scratchboard. Then students trace over their drawing which will transfer a light indication of the lines on their scratchboard.

From there students can use the scratch tools to remove black in areas where they want white to show. When finished, markers or watercolor can be used to tint certain areas with color.









Evaluation:
3 points -- Degree of difficulty and details included
3 points -- Good use of white and gradients
3 points -- Use of line weight/thick and thin lines
1 point -- Neatness of finished product


10 points total.
