This sculpture will be cast in resin (and wax so as to eventually be cast in bronze).
Gates, runners, and sprue lines are attached in certain places so resin or wax can flow into all parts of the mold.
Note also paper separators between parts. This is so that the mold material is easily separated when de-molding.
Note that the hand and back part of the cross has been removed. Those pieces will be molded separately.
